Commonly called TEJON by the local. The Coati is about the same size as a racoon, and has a similar color. The face and mask are dusky, and the tail is very long and carried upright. The nose in adults is long and narrow but much more blunt in young.
The Coati lives in Tropical forests and savannas. It is primarlily nocturnal and it often travels in groups (family units). When driving along the highway north toward Punta de Mita or Sayulita you will often see these animals crossing the road.
If you see one be very careful when driving because they do travel together and it is common for one to first cross th road and the next to follow after a brief delay. Because of this people often think the animal hs past and so they continue driving and end up killing th 2nd or 3rd to cross the road.
As many as 10 can cross the road one after another. To me they look a bit like a cross between a racoon and a monkey. |
